Limited Edition “Knee Deep in Hand Grenade Pins” T-Shirt
During the Vietnam War, Army Special Forces soldiers assigned to MACV-SOG carried out some of the most dangerous missions of the conflict. Operating in small reconnaissance teams, comprised mostly of indigenous forces and only two Americans, these elements operated across the borders in Laos, Cambodia, and North Vietnam.
Small recon teams aren’t adequately armed for major gun battles. Even close air support and rapid extraction weren’t always available when you’re on the wrong side of the border.
These kinds of events led to a common SF joke on resilience and combat mindset: “There I was, out of ammunition, knee deep in hand grenade pins, the enemy was all around me. I had them just where I wanted them…”
We don’t just remember these events and their casualties; we study them because every lesson is learned in blood.
